Personal pronouns

Personal pronouns replace people or things. Their form depends on person, number and case.

The action returns to the subject

Reflexive pronouns

A reflexive pronoun refers to the same person or thing as the subject.

  • Ich wasche mich.
  • Du erinnerst dich an den Termin.
  • Wir treffen uns um acht Uhr.
Important

For all third-person forms, the accusative and dative reflexive pronoun is sich.

Pointing something out

Demonstrative pronouns

Forms such as dieser, diese, dieses and jener identify a particular person or thing.

  • Dieses Buch gefällt mir.
  • Ich nehme den dort. (informal: the one over there)

Adding information

Relative pronouns

A relative pronoun connects a relative clause to a noun. Gender and number come from that noun; the pronoun's case comes from its role inside the relative clause.

  • Das ist die Frau, die nebenan wohnt.
  • Das ist der Mann, dem ich geholfen habe.
