Result in a subordinate clause

sodass and so dass

Both spellings are accepted. The subordinate clause states the result and places the conjugated verb at the end.

  • Es regnete stark, sodass die Straßen überflutet wurden.
  • Sie sprach sehr leise, so dass niemand sie verstand.

Emphasising degree

so …, dass

When so modifies an adjective or adverb in the main clause, it highlights the degree.

  • Der Film war so spannend, dass niemand einschlief.
  • Er fährt so schnell, dass ich Angst bekomme.
Structure

cause or intensity in the main clause · result in the dass-clause

Impossible result

zu …, als dass

This construction shows that something is impossible because a degree is too high or low. Subjunctive II is common.

  • Die Aufgabe ist zu schwer, als dass ich sie allein lösen könnte.
  • Es ist zu spät, als dass wir noch einkaufen könnten.

Alternative form

Result with deshalb

The result can also appear in a main clause with deshalb, daher or darum.

  • Es regnete stark. Deshalb waren die Straßen überflutet.
  • Sie sprach sehr leise. Daher verstand sie niemand.
